Just under a year ago, we set out to create something special: a new digital magazine in an age of unlimited online writing, unafraid to be different, unashamedly premium. We’re now approaching our first anniversary and the first five issues of Five out of Ten speak for themselves: we’ve featured some of the best games writing on any magazine or website, and if you doubt that, there’s only one way to find out.
Rest assured: we’re not going anywhere. We’ve already planned our next issues and have some great articles lined up for 2014. Our first anniversary issue, Change, will be out at the end of November. It’s going to be big – that’s all we’ll say for now! We are also working on new features for the website and bringing Five out of Ten to print for the first time. We want to make a printed publication that meets our standards of quality and reflects our values for paying our authors, but we promise it’ll be worth the wait.
More than ever, games writing needs a publication dedicated to critical thinking: something that can influence and challenge the way we look at videogames. Five out of Ten is that publication, and we need your help to tell others about it and share our work. Our initial statement of purpose was simple: “Videogames are worth writing about, and good writing is worth paying for”. That’s still true, but we can do better than that.
We will be the change we want to see. We’ll look after our contributors; they’re our family. We’ll look after our readers, too. We will strive to be inclusive: not as an act of tokenism, but because a range of experiences and voices enriches all our lives. We will unashamedly pursue excellence in our writing. We don’t want to be the biggest magazine in the world – just your favourite. And we’ll never give up.
